Career Highlights
Cooley continued to ascend in 2005, setting a franchise record for H-backs and tight ends with 71 receptions for 774 yards. He also logged seven touchdowns. His second NFL season followed an impressive rookie campaign in which he started nine games and catching 37 passes for 314 yards and six touchdowns.
How Acquired
Cooley was a third round selection (81st overall) by the Redskins in the 2004 NFL Draft.2005: Cooley established himself as one of the league's up-and-coming tight ends/H-backs with career highs in receptions (71), yards (774) and TD receptions (seven). He broke a Redskins franchise record for receptions by a tight end with 71 catches.
- In Week 5 at Denver, he recorded a career-high in receptions with eight and receiving yards with 82. He also had a TD catch in the game's final minutes, but the offense could not convert a game-tying two-point conversion.
- In Week 6 at Kansas City, Cooley recorded six catches for 54 yards and an 11-yard TD catch.
- In Week 9 vs. Philadelphia, Cooley tied for the team lead in receptions with seven for a career-high 85 yards.
- In Week 10 at Tampa Bay, he logged a team-high six catches for 66 yards and a long of 24.
- In Week 13 at St. Louis, he recorded a team-high five receptions for 58 yards and one TD, a four-yard catch from Mark Brunell.
- In Week 15 vs. Dallas, Cooley recorded six catches for 71 yards and scored a career-high three touchdowns. He caught passes of eight, two and 30 yards for TDs in the game.
- In Week 16 vs. the New York Giants, he tied for the team-high with five receptions for 41 yards and one touchdown. The TD came on a halfback option when Clinton Portis threw a 17-yard pass to Cooley for the score.
- In the Redskins' Divisional Playoff game at Seattle, Cooley caught four passes for 85 yards, including a 52-yard reception that helped set up the Redskins' only TD in a 20-10 loss to the Seahawks.
2004: Cooley played in all 16 games and started nine. He caught 37 passes for 314 yards, an 8.5 yards-per-catch average, and six touchdowns.
- Made his first pro start in Week 2 at New York Giants and caught three passes for 14 yards, including his first career TD, a 2-yard pass from Mark Brunell.
- In Week 10 vs. Cincinnati, he caught a 9-yard touchdown pass from Patrick Ramsey.
- Recorded a career-high seven passes for 31 yards and one touchdown in Week 12 at Pittsburgh.
- In Week 14 vs. Philadelphia, he caught five passes for a career-high 75 yards.
- Finished the season strong vs. Minnesota, catching three passes for 24 yards and one touchdown.
College/Personal:
- Cooley was an All-American second-team selection by the NFL Draft Report, adding honorable mention honors from Sports Illustrated. He was also a first-team All-Sun Belt Conference choice.
- He was a finalist for the Mackey Award, given to the nation's top tight end. He was team captain and was also voted Offensive MVP. He led the nation's tight ends in receptions and yards when he snagged a career-high 62 passes for 732 yards and six touchdowns.
- Cooley became the first non-receiver to lead the team in catches since 1983.
- He also carried three times for 21 yards and a touchdown.
- As a junior, he had three 100-yard receiving games and had his season-high 10 catches for 125 yards against Idaho. He finished the season with 31 catches for 502 yards and four touchdowns. He finished third on the team in catches.
- He was the recipient of the Golden Helmet award, given to the team's top hitter.
- He was an All-State selection at Logan High School in Logan, Utah. He caught 46 passes for 625 yards as a tight end and posted eight sacks as a defensive end as a senior.
- He was also an outstanding wrestler, going undefeated his senior year and earning the state title and All-American honors.
- He graduated in August 2003 from Utah State with a degree in art.
- Cooley is single. He is the son of Nancy and Ken Cooley.
- Cooley was the Redskins nominee for the Walter Payton Man of the Year award for all of his contributions to the community since joining the team.
- In October 2004, Cooley took part in the Charitable Foundation's Redskins Read program. The Redskins Read program and Verizon Reads program sponsored an event for over 100 Washington, D.C., and Prince George's County children.
- Cooley helped distribute over 2,000 pounds of food and turkeys at the annual Thanksgiving food drive. He also made a special visit to Children's National Medical Center to spend time with patients and help them make holiday ornaments to be displayed around the hospital.
- He attended a special movie screening of the movie Racing Stripes and a post-movie reception. The event helped benefit the Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation.
